After a leisurely breakfast, you will be picked up around 9:00am as we begin a tour of Nairobi and the suburbs. Starting with the city centre, we will visit principle landmarks including the KICC- Kenyatta International Conference Centre (roof top at the 28th floor for a birds eye view of Nairobi and the surroundings), the city market and surrounding bazaars. We then proceed to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org (visiting hours are strictly between 11am-12noon), where we learn about these baby elephants. Tour the house, now a museum with exhibits of most of her personal possessions. Proceed to the Giraffe Centre (AFEW- African Foundation for the Endangered Wildlife) home to the rare Rothschild Giraffe from where you can feed these endangered species from a specially constructed platform. Pre game drive balloon Safari The feeling is indescribable, crispness of the African air, chill in the wind that hits your face as your Mara hot air balloon gradually rises, smoothness in the exhale of your breath, and the excitement to see and learn more. One's physical presence can be felt on the plains of the Masai Mara when reading this. 04:30am –pick up depending on the lodge/camp location! By 6.15 a.m. you are almost arriving at the hot air balloon site in the Masai Mara. As you approach the site, the balloon seems bigger than you expected, the experience is one that has never been visited, and you are about to have a trip of a lifetime. Up and away we go! At 6.30 a.m., the hot air balloon safari starts. The captain asks you to relax and experience the wonders under the African sky. Free day to soak up and enjoy. LAMU ISLAND The ancient Swahili town of Lamu has rich history that dates back to the time when it was established as an Arab trading port in the 16th century. Ivory, timber, spices and human slaves were amongst the various commodities that passed through here from continental Africa, and were put in boats known as Dhows and shipped to destinations in the Middle East and India. The colourful culture that developed around the Swhahili people, the result of this long and interesting history of the area, is beautifully evident in Lamu. Up until now, you find no cars in Lamu, (except for a single vehicle, reportedly belonging to the District Commissioner) and the means of transport are either by donkey or on foot. Transportation between surrounding Islands is still to a large extent by traditional sailing dhows During your time on the island, you should head into town and lose yourself amongst the narrow streets and old Swahili buildings. You can also visit various museums, such as the Lamu Museum and the Swahili House Museum, as well as Lamu Fort, which was used as a prison for most of the 20th century. The Donkey Sanctuary is also an interesting, as these beasts of burden play such a key role in the daily life of the Islanders. For a unique experience, you may choose to join the locals at the outdoor cinema located just behind town. Lamu is Kenya’s oldest town and has managed to retain its medieval façade and more importantly, its medieval soul intact over such a long period of time.
